Ghostbusters PlayStation 3 Goodies

Ha! You say that about the PS3 now but wait until it’s blu ray function gives out after less than 2 years. Many others have had the same problem. I hope yours doesn’t as well (I don’t think it should if you bought a newer one). Anyway, my PS3 does everything except play blu-ray movies and that’s ALL I watch now. It’s cheaper just to buy a new blu-ray player. Otherwise, I have to waste money to send it back to SONY for repair.

Tony, from what you describe, your PS3 might not be broken. The online and PDF manuals on Sony’s site both say:

You may have to renew the AACS encryption key to play content such as movies on commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM). If a message indicating that the encryption key needs to be renewed is displayed, update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed. AACS (Advanced Access Content System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray movies. The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc. An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed. There may also be other times when the key has to be renewed.

If what Sony is saying is true, and if that’s what’s going on with your system, doing a system update should restore Blu-ray playability.

That said, the customer shouldn’t be forced to do upgrades so the system can continue to perform one of the functions it was designed to do, that it was already doing perfectly.

Update your system, this should help a bit. 🙂
